Sunday School Special Projects

College Connection

When our young people set out into the world, for the first time in their lives, to go on to college, the Saint Barbara Parish Family wants to remain a part of their lives. Through the program, our college students receive messages and periodical "care packages" to help strengthen that bond and keep them aware of the love and concern the family 'back home" has for them.  We hope that this not only keeps them connected to our Saint Barbara Parish, but most importantly to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the Orthodox Church.

Holy Friday Retreat

A spiritual retreat is held for students, where they will grow in their awareness of our Savior Jesus Christ in their lives.  Our children learn about their faith and Orthodox life, sing religious and liturgical hymns and express their creativity in arts and crafts. The retreat ends with the participation in the 3pm Friday afternoon service of “Taking Christ Down From the Cross.”

OCMC Coin Boxes

Each year during Great Lent, the Orthodox Christian Missions Center distributes Lenten Missions Boxes to Orthodox Churches throughout the country. The Orthodox Christian Missions Center is a Pan-Orthodox administrative body which coordinates the charitable activities for Orthodox throughout the world.  A box is given to each student at the beginning of Lent.  It is hoped that during the Lenten period, the student will make the effort to fill the box with monies earned through chores or allowances and in doing so assist others who are in need of our financial assistance.  The sacrifice of a few coins a day could then accumulate to a substantial amount by the time the boxes are collected after Pascha.

Saints Fair

The Saints Fair provides children the opportunity to learn, write, and speak about their Orthodox Faith through the lives of the Saints.  Students will work together to research and put together a project using a format of their choosing.  At the end of the year their projects will be presented in the church hall, similar to a “science fair” format.

Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival

The Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival provides teenagers the opportunity to learn, write, and speak about their Orthodox Faith, Church, and Heritage. This process will enhance their understanding and appreciation of their identity as Greek Orthodox Christians, and will cultivate spiritual growth and maturity.

Theme of the Year - Stewardship

Stewardship is based on the belief that all we have, and all that we are, comes from our Creator, God the Almighty.  In order to thank Him for our many blessings, each of us, as devoted Orthodox Christian Stewards should willingly give back a portion of our Time, Talent, and Treasure, with the realization that Stewardship is not an instituted “Church Program”, rather, it is a commitment, a way of life.  As our theme for the year, the students will have multiple lessons on Stewardship.  To put our lessons into action, each classroom will have a collection tray to cultivate an awareness within our children to give their treasures (no matter how much or how little) that will help them grow a life-long sense of responsibility and dedication to support their Church.  In keeping with our theme, while also using our new tablets, the high school class will be putting together a video on the topic of Stewardship that will feature students from each grade.
